BREAD and Water
The availability of fresh, drinkable water is an ever-present concern in Africa and particularly in Berega. The situation is not helped by climate change and the availability of water could become a real constraint on the activities within the village, especially with the growing number of students, patients and staff.
To help with this we launched an appeal for money to help improve the situation there. The project entailed completely renovating and renewing the rainwater collection system. You can see what we wanted to do in the film below, and that work has now been completed.
The next phase of the work is establish a new bore hole and investigative work was carried out by a Tanzanian NGO called SAWA who specialise in rural sanitation and water projects. The logistics and design have raised problems with the quality of ground water available. By the end of 2025, the Trustees concluded negotiations with SAWA to refurbish an existing bore hole and to provide a new transmission pipeline to connect it to the hospital, school, etc. Work should start in March 2026.
The final phase will be to supply some new tanks and gutters to improve and extend the rain water harvesting system. We hope that this work will be carried out in 2027.
